The UC Irvine women’s tennis team charged to an upset over a higher ranked opponent as they defeated the No. 48 San Diego State University 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. UCI are 4-4 overall this season as they cap off their busy week with an even record.

Sophomore Franziska Goettsching and Junior Kristina Smith dominated their doubles match 8-2 to help UCI lead in doubles. However, the other pairs failed to further the cause as the Aztec came back to win the following two doubles matches to take the doubles point.

The Anteaters stayed confident as Smith, freshman Kat Facey,  and junior Stephanie Hammel won their respective matches. SDSU kept their chances of winning alive after beating Goettsching in two tightly contested sets that both ended 7-6. However, sophomore Marivick Mamiit clinched the match for UCI after coming back from a 4-6 loss with a 6-0 and 6-3 victory.

Pepperdine 4, UCI 3

No. 29 Pepperdine edged out UCI to a 4-3 victory on Thursday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium. The loss gave UCI an even home record at 2-2.

The Anteaters struggled at the start of doubles as senior pair Courtney Byron and Hannah Holladay lost their match 8-4. However UCI held on as their No. 2 and No. 3 pairs won their matches 8-4 to take away the doubles point.

Freshman Ali Facey was the first to lose as she got swept without winning a single game, losing both sets 6-0. Pepperdine came up with a 3-1 advantage after sophomore Franziska Goettsching and Byron lost their matches as well. The Crimson took the game away after beating junior Kristina Smith 6-4 and 6-3.

Despite already losing the match, sophomore Marivick Mamiit salvaged UCI’s singles record after winning her match with 10 points in a tiebreaker. Freshman Kat Facey finished her match in dramatic fashion as well, taking her tiebreaker set 15-13 after splitting her two sets 6-4 win and 5-7 loss.
