Sports in Brief (SIB): Week 2
The men’s soccer team traveled to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, October 5, where they battled for one more time before having the victory snatched in double overtime by the Gauchos with just 24 seconds left to play. UC Irvine took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a goal from Lester Hayes III from the top of the box for his third goal of the season and second in back-to-back games. Fourth-ranked UCSB (8-3, 2-1) tied it at one all in the 49th minute in front of the largest soccer crowd this season at 7,822. Still tied after 90 minutes of action, the teams headed into overtime where UCSB eventually found the back of the net in double overtime. Red-shirt freshman Michael Breslin totaled six saves.
Women’s Cross Country
Emma Archuleta finished in 42nd place with a time of 23:7.9 to lead the ’Eaters at the Triton Classic in La Jolla on Saturday on the campus of UC San Diego. The next ’Eater to cross the line was Camille Maron at 55th place with a time of 24:11.7. UC Irvine will compete at UC Riverside on Saturday, October 12 at the Highlander Invitational.
