Men’s Volleyball

UCI 3, Pepperdine 0

The men’s season opened on Tuesday, January 8 at the Bren Events Center against no. 4 ranked Pepperdine as the ’Eaters swept the Waves with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 win.

In the first set, the ’Eaters took a three-point lead at 17-14 and took the largest lead of the night at that point at 21-16 before the Waves rallied to get within one at 22-21. UC Irvine regained control of the score and took the first set with a 25-22 finish.

At the start of the second frame, Pepperdine jumped ahead with a 12-9 advantage but just as soon lost the lead as the ’Eaters knotted it at 12-12 and again at 18 all. Irvine took the second set 25-20.

In the final frame, the Waves trailed by three at 4-1 before leading by a point at 8-7. The teams traded points until Irvine established a 20-17 advantage. The ’Eaters maintained the lead and finished the set with a 25-21 win.

Sophomore Zach La Cavera hit .577 for the match while UCI collectively hit .405. Senior and setter Chris Austin totaled 40 assists and senior Kevin Tillie put away eight kills.

UCI 0, USC 3

As their first blemish on the perfect record, USC swept the ’Eaters, dealing them their first loss of the season (25-21, 25-23, 27-25).

With a two-point advantage at 19-17 in the first frame, the Trojans narrowed the gap at 21-20 and would score the next five points to take the first set.

In the second set, the Trojans owned a four-point lead at 20-16 before the ’Eaters tied it at 22 all. The teams traded points but USC claimed the victory at 25-23.

The Trojans would score six unanswered points to open the third set and take a 22-15 advantage. Irvine then mounted a five-point run to get within two at 22-20. The Trojans added another two points for a 24-20 advantage. With the crowd on its feet, the ’Eaters tied it at 24-24. On back-to-back kills, the Trojans would end it at 27-25 to solidify their win.
