By Maggie O’Hara

A group of UCI students placed third in the nation in the 34th Annual American Mock Trial Association Collegiate National Championship in Minnesota on the weekend of April 20-22.

UCI sent two teams to the national competition. Their first team finished the championship with a total of five wins and hit top competitors, including UCLA and the ultimate winners of the competition, Miami University.

UCI’s second team took second place in their division, with nine-and-a-half wins overall. Two team members were also awarded individual awards: Tristan Lim, as an All-American attorney, and Dev Madeka as the highest ranked All-American witness in the competition. After matches with some of the best teams in the tournament, including Yale University, the team placed third in the nation.

Overall, the competition was successful for team members and coaches alike. UCI’s Mock Trial Team left Minnesota with a third-place trophy and the best record in UCI’s history.
